Frequently asked questions

What is the default PowerPoint slide size?

Since PowerPoint 2013 the default is 16:9 widescreen: 33.87 Γ— 19.05 cm, which is 13.333 Γ— 7.5 inches. The older 4:3 default was 25.4 Γ— 19.05 cm (10 Γ— 7.5 inches).

What is a 16:9 slide in pixels?

It depends on the DPI you export at. At 96 DPI a 16:9 slide is 1280 Γ— 720 px; at 150 DPI it is 2000 Γ— 1125 px; at 300 DPI it is 4000 Γ— 2250 px. Set the DPI above and the converter shows the exact number.

What is EMU and why does PowerPoint use it?

EMU stands for English Metric Unit: 914,400 EMU per inch and 360,000 per centimetre. Those numbers divide evenly by both inches and centimetres, so PowerPoint stores every position as a whole number of EMU and never accumulates rounding error.

Should I use 16:9 or 4:3?

16:9 for anything shown on a screen β€” projectors, laptops and video calls have been 16:9 for over a decade. 4:3 only if you are presenting on old hardware or printing to A4-shaped handouts.

How do I change the slide size in PowerPoint?

Design tab β†’ Slide Size β†’ Custom Slide Size, then type the width and height. Keynote uses Document β†’ Slide Size; Google Slides uses File β†’ Page setup.

Will changing the slide size distort my content?

PowerPoint asks whether to Maximize or Ensure Fit. Ensure Fit scales everything down so nothing is cropped; Maximize fills the slide but can push content off the edges. Ensure Fit is the safer choice on an existing deck.
