Frequently asked questions
How do I compare two Word documents?
Load both .docx files above and the differences appear immediately. In Word itself the equivalent is Review β Compare β Compare, which requires the desktop application; this page works anywhere with a browser.
Are my documents uploaded to a server?
No. A .docx is a zip archive of XML, and both the unzipping and the comparison happen in your browser. The files never leave your device.
Does it work with .doc files?
Only .docx. The older binary .doc format is not supported β open it in Word or an online converter and save as .docx first.
Will it show changes inside tables?
Yes. Table cells are compared as text, and added or deleted rows appear in the structural summary.
Can I compare a Word document with a PDF?
Not directly. Convert the PDF to .docx first, and expect some false differences from the conversion's formatting choices.
Is this the same as Track Changes?
It produces a similar view, but from two finished files. Track Changes has to be turned on before editing; this works after the fact, even when the two versions came from different people.
